Ran Ran completes wild training, named a reintroduction candidate

Ran Ran finished wild training and was named a candidate for the giant-panda reintroduction trial at Guanshan, Jiangxi.

In December 2019, Ran Ran completed the CCRCGP wild-training programme at Hetaoping and was named one of the candidates for the giant-panda reintroduction trial at the Guanshan National Nature Reserve (官山国家级自然保护区) in Jiangxi, alongside Pan Wang and Yun Er.

Reintroduction means releasing wild-trained, captive-born pandas into their historical range to rebuild a wild population. The trial aimed to gather rare data on how pandas adapt to a natural environment and climate, and to inform models of past range loss and future climate impact.

The planned release did not ultimately proceed; Ran Ran returned to the Hetaoping base. The experience nonetheless gave her the strong environmental adaptability and resilience that keepers later noted.
