Rio (里奥), the first giant panda ever born in Indonesia, was officially named by the Indonesian President, according to a report from iPanda Channel on August 7, 2026. The cub was born on November 27, 2025 at Taman Safari Indonesia in Cisarua, West Java.
The naming ceremony marks a significant milestone for giant panda conservation cooperation between China and Indonesia. Rio is the offspring of Cai Tao (778) and Hu Chun (794), the pair loaned to Indonesia under the international conservation breeding agreement.
The cub's birth was the first successful giant panda birth in Indonesian history, and the presidential naming underscores the high-level attention both nations place on the species' conservation. The name "Rio" was chosen to reflect the cub's Indonesian heritage while symbolizing the friendship between the two countries.
