Gao Gao

Gao Gao is a male giant panda born September 1, 1992, at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, with a global giant panda studbook number of 486. His mother was Shi Shi, a wild female giant panda with studbook number 355, and his father was a wild male giant panda with studbook number 354, giving him a fully wild genetic lineage rare among long-term captive giant panda individuals. He was captured as a subadult in the wild shortly after his birth, before entering permanent captive care as part of international collaborative conservation efforts. He was transferred to San Diego Zoo on his first birthday, September 1, 1993, where he has resided ever since.

Over the course of his time in captivity, Gao Gao sired five giant panda cubs, including the widely recognized Mei Sheng and Su Lin, both born at San Diego Zoo as part of cross-institutional breeding initiatives. His wild genetic background made him an exceptionally valuable contributor to the captive giant panda population, as his offspring introduced genetic diversity critical to reducing inbreeding risk in the managed global panda population. His breeding participation falls under the joint international giant panda conservation breeding program overseen by the Chinese Association of Zoological Gardens and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, which prioritizes maintaining a robust, genetically diverse assurance population for the vulnerable species.

Beyond his breeding contributions, Gao Gao has been a high-profile public ambassador for giant panda conservation throughout his residency at San Diego Zoo. Millions of visitors from around the world have encountered the species through him, with educational programming paired with his habitat raising awareness of the threats facing wild giant pandas in their native ranges in China’s Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu provinces. His decades-long presence in the United States has also supported sustained cross-border collaboration on panda conservation research, including studies on panda reproductive biology, veterinary care, and habitat restoration strategies for wild populations.
