Huan Huan

Huan Huan (studbook number 1248) is a female giant panda born on August 4, 2008, at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. Her father is Xiao Shuang and her mother is Yuan Yuan, placing her in a well-documented lineage of captive-bred giant pandas managed under Chinese conservation programs. She was transferred to ZooParc de Beauval in Saint-Aignan, France, on August 4, 2009, her first birthday, as part of a long-term collaborative conservation partnership between Chinese wildlife authorities and the French zoological institution.

As a participant in the global coordinated captive breeding program for giant pandas, Huan Huan contributes to ongoing efforts to maintain and expand the genetic diversity of the vulnerable species. Captive breeding programs are a core component of giant panda conservation strategies, as they support a robust backup population to complement wild populations and enable research into species health, behavior, and reproductive biology that is difficult to conduct in remote natural habitats. Huan Huan exhibits all standard giant panda traits in captivity, including a diet made up almost entirely of various bamboo species and extended daily resting periods, which are characteristic of the species’ low-energy foraging strategy.

Huan Huan has emerged as one of ZooParc de Beauval’s most prominent cultural and educational draws, attracting millions of visitors from across France and around the world each year. Her presence at the zoo has supported widespread public education about giant panda habitat loss, conservation interventions, and the value of cross-border collaborative wildlife protection. The public interest she generates also funds additional conservation work both in captive breeding facilities and in giant panda natural reserves in China, supporting the long-term survival of the species as a whole.
