Wang Wang is a male giant panda born on 23 August 2008 at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. He is the offspring of Zhuang Zhuang (studbook 550) and Mei Mei (studbook 649), two adult giant pandas housed at the China Conservation and Research Center. Currently living at Adelaide Zoo in South Australia, he participates in the joint giant panda conservation research program run by the zoo and Chinese wildlife management authorities. The program supports captive breeding research and public education focused on giant panda habitat protection. As one of only two giant pandas permanently housed in Australia, Wang Wang draws large public audiences that help raise awareness of global endangered species conservation. He displays typical giant panda foraging behavior, spending most of his day feeding on bamboo and resting. His presence supports long-term research into giant panda biology, and strengthens collaborative conservation ties between Australia and China.

Full Narrative
Wang Wang (studbook number 1281) is a male giant panda born on 23 August 2008 at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. His father is Yuan Zi and mother is Mei Lan, and he is part of a well-documented captive giant panda lineage tracked through official global panda studbook records to support species management efforts. He spent the first year of his life at the research center in China, receiving standard captive care and observation as part of the center’s core giant panda conservation breeding program.
In August 2009, on his first birthday, Wang Wang was transferred to Adelaide Zoo in South Australia as part of a long-term joint giant panda conservation research program between the zoo and Chinese wildlife management authorities. He is one of only two giant pandas permanently housed in Australia, a placement designed to facilitate cross-national research on captive giant panda biology, reproductive ecology, and adaptive care in non-native habitat contexts. The program also incorporates structured public education components focused on the protection of wild giant panda habitats in central China.
Wang Wang has become a prominent public draw at Adelaide Zoo, with consistent visitor interest in his daily routine, which follows typical giant panda behavioral patterns: he spends the majority of each day foraging on species of bamboo selected to match the nutritional profile of his wild counterparts’ diet, and the remainder of his time resting or engaging in enrichment activities designed to support his physical and psychological welfare. His public presence drives widespread public awareness of endangered species conservation more broadly, while the long-term data collected from his care contributes to global research on captive giant panda management best practices. The ongoing collaborative program surrounding Wang Wang also serves as a functional diplomatic and conservation link between Australian and Chinese wildlife research institutions, supporting shared knowledge exchange to support the long-term survival of the species.
