Xing Bao Jr.

Xing Bao Jr., Chinese name 星宝, is a male giant panda born on August 8, 2013, at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. His official international studbook number is 1312, and he is recorded as an active living individual in the global giant panda population registry. He is the offspring of adult giant pandas Xing Ba and Ying Ying, both housed at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, and his full lineage is documented in the international giant panda studbook maintained by global species conservation coordinators to support the genetic diversity of the captive population.

Xing Bao Jr. was transferred to Zoo Negara, the National Zoo of Malaysia, on August 8, 2014, his first birthday, as part of the China-Malaysia giant panda international conservation cooperation program. The long-term collaborative initiative supports cross-national research into giant panda captive breeding, as well as public education efforts focused on the species’ unique ecology and habitat protection needs. Since his arrival, he has been one of the most high-profile animal residents at the zoo, with husbandry protocols overseen jointly by Malaysian zoo staff and conservation specialists from the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda.

As a captive-bred representative of his species, Xing Bao Jr. exhibits the characteristic bamboo-focused foraging behavior common to wild and captive giant pandas, with dietary and enrichment routines tailored to support his physical and behavioral health. He draws thousands of visitors to Zoo Negara each year, serving as a public-facing conservation ambassador for giant panda protection efforts, and has helped raise widespread public awareness of the species’ recovery following its 2016 reclassification from Endangered to Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. His ongoing presence in Malaysia also facilitates continued cross-border knowledge sharing to support the preservation of both captive giant panda populations and their wild native habitats in central China.
