Ping Ping (平平, studbook #704) was born on July 6, 2008 at the Ya'an Bifengxia Base of the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, weeks after the May 12 Wenchuan earthquake.
Her mother, Guo Guo (帼帼, studbook #439), had been pulled from a landslide triggered by the earthquake by center staff. After treatment and transfer to Ya'an, Guo Guo gave birth to a male-female twin pair — Ping Ping and her twin brother An An (安安, #705) — the first captive-born giant panda twins in the world after the earthquake. Their names were later chosen through a public online vote, and both cubs were adopted by Chinese actor Huang Xiaoming.
Ping Ping grew into a quiet, tree-climbing panda, the calm counterpart to her lively twin brother. She would go on to become a World Expo panda in 2010 and later a mother of five cubs.
