Basic Profile
⚠️ Not the panda going to the United States This page is Ping Ping (平平), studbook #704 — a female born in 2008 who has never left China for a US zoo. The Ping Ping selected for Zoo Atlanta in 2026 is a different individual of the same name: Ping Ping (平平, #1230), a male born in 2020 at the Chengdu Research Base. He will travel together with Fu Shuang (福双, #1250). If you are looking for the pandas heading to Atlanta, see those two profiles instead.
Ping Ping (Chinese: 平平) is a female giant panda born on July 6, 2008, at the Ya’an Bifengxia Base. She holds the global studbook number 704.
Her mother is Guo Guo (帼帼, studbook #439), who was rescued from a landslide caused by the Wenchuan earthquake. Ping Ping and her twin brother An An (安安, studbook #705) were the first captive twin pandas born globally after the 2008 earthquake — a symbol of survival and hope. Their names were chosen through a public online vote, and they were adopted by Chinese actor Huang Xiaoming.
Personality
Ping Ping is described as gentle and quiet, often resting on tree branches, in contrast to her lively twin brother An An.

80 Years of Panda Diplomacy: From Wartime Gifts to Global Research Loans
Trace the transformation of giant panda diplomacy from 1941, when Soong Mei-ling gifted the first pandas to America, through the landmark 1972 Nixon-era exchange, to today's international research loan agreements that channel millions of dollars annually into wild habitat conservation. This is the untold story of how a reclusive mountain bear became the world's most powerful diplomatic animal.

Ping Ping and Fu Shuang: The 2026 Return of Giant Pandas to Atlanta
On September 27, 2026 at 02:55, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang boarded a charter flight from Chengdu Shuangliu Airport and landed safely at Zoo Atlanta at 08:55 US time the same day, opening a 10-year conservation stay with a three-month quarantine overseen by Chinese staff — the closing chapter of a timeline that opened with Zoo Atlanta's April 2026 agreement and the September 24 White House announcement. This is the next chapter of a panda story that began at the zoo in 1999: 25 years of cooperation, seven Atlanta-born cubs, the 2024 homecoming, and now a new partnership.
