Short version
Ying Ying (迎迎, studbook #724) is a male giant panda born on August 23, 2008 at the Chengdu Research Base, twin sister of Ni Ni (#725). Son of Cheng Ji (#521) and Xiao Ping Ping; nicknamed Tie Tou Ying; sire of Jin Yu (#1148) and Bao Ge/Bao Mei.
Ying Ying (Chinese: 迎迎), studbook number 724, is a male giant panda born on August 23, 2008 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, weighing 206 grams at birth. His mother is Cheng Ji (成绩, studbook 521) and his father is Xiao Ping Ping (小平平), a wild-rescued male. He is the twin brother of Ni Ni (妮妮, #725).
Nicknames: Tie Tou Ying (铁头迎, “Iron Head Ying”) — earned as a cub for headbutting — plus San Ye (三爷, “Third Master”) and Mian Tou (馒头, “Steamed Bun”) among keepers and fans.
📝 Number notes: Ying Ying’s number #724 is adjacent to twin sister Ni Ni’s #725, following the consecutive-number convention for twin pairs (as with Lin Yang #538 / Lin Hui #539). An earlier batch had briefly mis-typed Ni Ni as #738 — corrected to #725.

culture
Trace the transformation of giant panda diplomacy from 1941, when Soong Mei-ling gifted the first pandas to America, through the landmark 1972 Nixon-era exchange, to today's international research loan agreements that channel millions of dollars annually into wild habitat conservation. This is the untold story of how a reclusive mountain bear became the world's most powerful diplomatic animal.
nature
Giant pandas evolved for the cool, misty mountains of Sichuan — yet they have thrived in the equatorial heat of Singapore and Malaysia. This article explores the high-tech climate control systems, indoor enclosure design, and dietary adjustments that make tropical panda keeping possible, and what this extreme-environment success reveals about panda physiological resilience.
