A Bao

A Bao (Chinese name: 阿宝, studbook number 823) is a male giant panda born on September 4, 2011 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in Sichuan Province, China. His father is Fu Ni, and his mother is the giant panda with studbook number 465, identified in base records as Ya Ya; he is a direct descendant of the foundational captive giant panda Pan Pan, a lineage that carries high genetic value for the global captive panda population. He has resided at the Chengdu Research Base for his entire life, as the facility maintains one of the world’s largest and most well-documented captive breeding programs for the species.

As part of the base’s core ex-situ conservation initiatives, A Bao participates in structured observation and research projects focused on giant panda behavior, captive welfare, and reproductive health. His relatively calm, curious, and active temperament has made him a consistent participant in public education programming, as he regularly occupies visible outdoor and indoor enclosures open to visitor viewing.
