Fei Yun

Fei Yun (Chinese name: 飞云, studbook number 781) is a female giant panda born on July 30, 2010 at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. Her father is Fu Ni (studbook number 531) and her mother is Miao Miao (studbook number 552), both of whom are well-documented participants in the global giant panda captive breeding program, with lineage tracing back to foundational wild-born individuals Pan Pan and Basi. As a member of the managed captive panda population, her birth contributed to the growing genetic diversity of the species under human care, a key priority for conservation efforts at the time.

On July 30, 2011, her first birthday, Fei Yun was transferred to Dalian Forest Zoo in northeast China, where she has resided permanently since. She is part of the public education component of China’s national giant panda conservation initiative, and has become one of the zoo’s most popular resident animals, drawing consistent visitor interest each year. Her daily routine aligns with typical giant panda species traits, including consuming 12 to 18 kilograms of bamboo per day, periodic climbing activity, and resting for 10 to 16 hours in a 24-hour cycle, behaviors that zookeepers document regularly as part of ongoing captive husbandry research.

Fei Yun serves as a widely recognized cultural ambassador for giant panda conservation in northeast China, a region with limited regular access to the species for most local residents. Her presence has supported targeted public outreach campaigns focused on threatened species protection, and data collected from her long-term care at Dalian Forest Zoo has contributed to published research on adapting giant panda husbandry protocols for cooler northern climates, where bamboo availability and seasonal temperature patterns differ significantly from the species’ native range in southwest China. In addition to local programming, her regular appearances in regional media have helped raise broader public awareness of global biodiversity protection efforts, particularly among younger audiences.
