Short version
An An (安安) was a male giant panda gifted to the Soviet Union in 1959 as a mate for Ping Ping. He was the second panda sent to Moscow, weighing 72.5 kg. His image appeared on a 1964 Moscow Zoo centennial stamp. In 1966 and 1968, he was flown to London to mate with Chi Chi (姬姬) — both attempts failed. He died in Moscow in 1973.
An An (Chinese: 安安) was a male giant panda from Sichuan, weighing 72.5 kg. In 1959, Beijing Mayor Peng Zhen presented him as a gift to the city of Moscow — intended as a mate for Ping Ping (平平), the first panda gifted to the USSR in 1957.
He arrived at Moscow Zoo on August 19, 1959. Together with Ping Ping, he drew approximately 100,000 visitors on opening day.
An An’s most famous story involves Chi Chi (姬姬), the female panda at the London Zoo. Chi Chi had originally been sent to the USSR in 1957 as a gift, but was discovered to be female (having been mistaken for male) and was deemed unsuitable as a mate for Ping Ping. She was sent to London instead.
In 1966, the London Zoo arranged for An An to travel to London to mate with Chi Chi — a diplomatic and scientific event covered by media worldwide. The two pandas showed no interest in each other, and the attempt failed.
A second attempt in 1968 was similarly unsuccessful. An An returned to Moscow, where he died in 1973.
His image was featured on a Moscow Zoo centennial postage stamp in 1964.
