An Xin

An Xin (Chinese: 安心), studbook number 1180, is a female giant panda born on May 1, 2019 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Her registration is recorded in the global giant panda breeding registry maintained by the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. She is the offspring of Yuan Yuan and Bing Xing, two giant pandas that are long-term residents of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, with lineages well-documented within the coordinated national captive giant panda breeding program. Her birth was part of the program’s ongoing efforts to maintain genetic diversity among the ex situ giant panda population, a core goal of the species’ broader conservation strategy.

On her first birthday, May 1, 2020, An Xin was transferred to Chimelong Ocean Kingdom in Zhuhai, where she currently resides as part of the China Giant Panda Protection and Management System’s public education and ex situ conservation initiatives. Before the transfer, official veterinary assessments confirmed she was in good health and developmentally prepared for the transition to a new facility, standard protocol for inter-institutional giant panda transfers under the national conservation framework. The facility provides regular guided public viewing opportunities for visitors, with programming that contextualizes An Xin’s care within broader information about giant panda ecology, wild habitat threats, and ongoing conservation work across China.

As a captive-bred giant panda, An Xin exhibits characteristic species behaviors, including a diet composed primarily of multiple bamboo varieties and a largely solitary daily activity pattern outside of scheduled keeper care sessions. She is a popular draw for both domestic and international visitors to Chimelong Ocean Kingdom, helping to raise widespread public awareness of the need for giant panda conservation efforts.
