Bo Si

Bo Si, a male giant panda with the global studbook number 1408, was born on January 1, 2024, at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. He is confirmed to be alive as of 2024, and is the offspring of two giant pandas, father Guo Guo and mother Ya Ya, both of which are permanent residents of the research center and have long participated in its coordinated captive breeding program. Bo Si’s birth was a planned outcome of the center’s efforts to maintain a genetically diverse captive giant panda population, a core component of global species recovery strategies for the vulnerable bear species.

Currently residing at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda located in Wolong National Nature Reserve, Sichuan Province, Bo Si is enrolled in the center’s captive breeding and early developmental monitoring programs. Researchers regularly collect baseline data on his weight gain, motor skill development, feeding patterns, and social interactions with his mother and other young pandas, with the information compiled to refine juvenile panda care protocols and inform conservation planning for both captive and wild populations. As of his first months of life, he has displayed typical behavioral traits of his species, showing a preference for climbing low branches in his enclosed habitat and seeking out fresh bamboo shoots native to Sichuan’s temperate mountain forests when introduced to solid food.

Bo Si holds public and conservation significance as one of the youngest giant pandas born in China’s state-run breeding network, and serves as a visible representative of global endangered biodiversity protection efforts. His participation in the managed breeding program contributes to long-term goals of maintaining a genetically robust captive population that can act as a buffer against risks facing wild giant panda populations, including habitat fragmentation and extreme climate events. As he matures, he is expected to join the center’s breeding pool to continue expanding the genetic diversity of the global captive giant panda population.
