Duo Duo

Duo Duo (Chinese name: 朵朵, studbook number 739) is a female giant panda born on July 19, 2008 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in Sichuan Province, China. She has remained under the continuous captive management of the base her entire life, as a registered member of the global coordinated captive giant panda conservation program, which tracks individual animals across international zoological and breeding institutions to support species survival efforts. Her birth in 2008 fell during a period of expanded captive breeding research at the Chengdu Base, which had already established itself as a leading institution for giant panda protection and population management.

Duo Duo’s lineage represents a significant contribution to the global captive giant panda gene pool. Her father is Pan Pan (studbook number 432), a prolific breeding male resident at the Chengdu Base who sired dozens of offspring throughout his lifetime, playing a critical role in expanding and diversifying the global captive population. Her mother is Hua Mei, a long-term resident of the base with her own established place in the captive panda lineage record. This well-documented parentage makes Duo Duo a valuable candidate for coordinated breeding efforts, as conservation programs prioritize maintaining high genetic diversity to reduce inbreeding risk and support the long-term health of the captive population.

Currently, Duo Duo resides full-time at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, where her daily care is managed alongside the more than 100 other giant pandas housed at the facility. She is an active participant in the base’s public education programming, and her calm, human-socialized temperament has made her a popular draw for both domestic and international visitors to the base.
