Fu Lu

Basic Profile

Fu Lu (Chinese: 福禄, nicknamed Hulu/葫芦 — “Gourd”), studbook number 883, is a female giant panda born on August 8, 2013 at the China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Pandas (CCRCGP) Ya’an Bifengxia Base. Her mother is Ying Hua (瑛华) and her father is Bai Yang (白杨).

She is a member of the famous “Ying Ying family” (英英家族) and is described by her keepers as sensitive and unusually clean — a panda who prefers to keep her fur pristine and her enclosure tidy. She also has distinctive “dolphin forehead” and “small bird eye circles” features inherited from her maternal lineage.

Her nickname “Hulu” (gourd) comes from her birth date: August 8 (8/8), and the number 8 resembles a gourd in shape.

Fu Lu’s siblings include Da Bai Tu (大白兔), Hua Sheng (华生), Dian Dian (点点), Fu Xing (福星/Pang Da Hai), Fu Tao (福涛), Fu Lin (福琳), Fu Jiang (福将), and Hua Bao (华宝).

Fu Wan: The Inspirational Cub

Fu Lu’s daughter Fu Wan (福菀) was born with a congenital spinal condition that left her hind legs non-functional. Despite her disability, Fu Wan learned to climb using only her front arms, pulling herself onto wooden platforms and branches with extraordinary determination. Her story inspired thousands of fans who saw in her a refusal to surrender to limitation.

Fu Ru: Tragic Loss

Fu Ru, Fu Wan’s twin sister, died on August 16, 2024 at approximately 2 years old from thrombocytopenia and coagulation dysfunction causing massive hemorrhage and multi-organ failure.

Life Journey

In 2014, Fu Lu was transferred to Beijing Zoo alongside Meng Da and Meng Er, though she was not initially exhibited. In late 2018 or early 2019, she was quietly exchanged to the Chengdu Research Base in a swap with Fuwa (科小).
