Short version

Ke Nian (科念), adopted name "Gong Zhu" (宫主), is a female giant panda born June 22, 2022 at the Chengdu Research Base. Daughter of Olympia (the IOC President-named panda), she made news in March 2023 when she chewed a discarded mask in her enclosure — her mother Olympia immediately intervened and led her away.

Basic Profile

Ke Nian (Chinese: 科念, adopted name Gong Zhu/宫主), is a female giant panda born on June 22, 2022 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Her mother is Olympia (奥林匹亚, studbook 947) — the panda named by IOC President Thomas Bach.

Life Journey

In December 2022, Ke Nian was named as part of the base’s “Class of 2022” and participated in the New Year group debut at the Moon Nursery alongside 6 other cubs.

The Mask Incident (March 2023)

On March 22, 2023, Ke Nian found a discarded face mask that had been dropped by a visitor in her outdoor exercise yard. She began chewing on it. Her mother Olympia immediately noticed, retrieved the mask from her, and led her away from the area.

Keepers, who had spotted the incident on monitors, brought Ke Nian inside for a thorough veterinary examination. She was confirmed to have not swallowed any material and was in good health. The base used the incident to renew calls for文明参观 (civilized visiting) behavior.

Adoption

In May 2023, Ke Nian was lifelong adopted by Gongyanlou (宫延楼) and given the adoption name “Gong Zhu” (宫主).
