Lumi

Lumi is a female giant panda with the studbook number 1103, born on September 20, 2014, at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. She is the offspring of male giant panda Tiantan (studbook number 612) and female giant panda Haizi (studbook number 719). Born as part of the center’s long-running captive breeding program designed to support the recovery of the vulnerable giant panda species, Lumi demonstrated normal developmental milestones in her first year of life, including the gradual shift from maternal milk to a bamboo-focused diet and the emergence of characteristic species behaviors such as play climbing and social interaction with conspecifics at the facility.

Lumi was transferred to Ähtäri Zoo in Finland on September 20, 2015, her first birthday, as part of a formal international giant panda conservation cooperation agreement between Chinese and Finnish wildlife authorities. She is a core participant in the global collaborative giant panda conservation breeding program, which is coordinated by a network of international wildlife conservation institutions to maintain genetic diversity within the captive panda population and develop evidence-based care protocols for the species. Since her arrival at Ähtäri Zoo, she has exhibited typical healthy giant panda behaviors, including multiple daily bamboo foraging sessions and regular tree climbing in her purpose-built habitat that replicates key features of the species’ native mountain forest environment.

As a prominent cultural and conservation ambassador for Chinese giant panda protection efforts, Lumi draws hundreds of thousands of visitors to Ähtäri Zoo annually, raising public awareness across Finland and wider Northern Europe of the threats facing giant pandas and other vulnerable bear species globally. Her presence at the zoo supports ongoing research into giant panda husbandry, dietary adaptations, and reproductive biology, with findings from these studies shared across the global panda conservation network to improve care practices for the species both in captivity and in reintroduction programs for wild populations. She also serves as a visible reminder of the importance of protecting the giant panda’s native montane forest habitats in central China, which remain critical to the long-term survival of wild panda populations.
