Mao Zhu

Mao Zhu (Chinese name: 毛竹) is a male giant panda born on July 26, 2014, at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, with an official international studbook number of 586. He is the offspring of sire Mei Lan and dam Zhu Lin, both captive-bred giant pandas housed at the Chengdu Research Base prior to his birth. Per the global giant panda studbook system maintained by international conservation bodies, his lineage is fully documented, supporting the genetic diversity management goals of the global captive panda breeding program. He remained at the Chengdu Research Base for the first year of his life, receiving standard neonatal and juvenile care tailored to captive giant panda health and development protocols.

On his first birthday, July 26, 2015, Mao Zhu was transferred to Kunming Zoo in Yunnan Province, China, as part of the Chinese Association of Zoological Gardens’ coordinated giant panda captive conservation and education initiative. Since his arrival at the zoo, he has been integrated into ongoing public education programming focused on raising visitor awareness of giant panda protection needs and the broader biodiversity of native Chinese ecosystems. His calm, human-socialized temperament has made him accessible for structured observation opportunities used in the zoo’s educational workshops for both youth and adult visitor groups.

As one of Kunming Zoo’s most high-profile resident species, Mao Zhu draws tens of thousands of visitors each year, many of whom travel specifically to observe giant panda biology and behavior in a managed setting. His public presence serves as a tangible ambassador for habitat conservation efforts focused on the Qinling and Minshan mountain ranges, the core remaining wild giant panda habitats. His residency at Kunming Zoo also demonstrates the practical role of sustainable captive panda populations in reinforcing public support for wild conservation measures, linking ex situ breeding programs to long-term in situ protection goals for the species.
