Mei Qing

Mei Qing (Chinese: 梅清, studbook number 725) is a female giant panda born on July 27, 2007 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Her sire is Pan Pan (studbook number 432) and her dam is Ya Ya (studbook number 487), both long-term resident giant pandas at the Chengdu Research Base, placing her lineage within the official global managed captive breeding program for the species, which is designed to preserve genetic diversity and support long-term population sustainability for the vulnerable giant panda. She remained at the Chengdu facility for the first year of her life, receiving standard neonatal and juvenile care from the base’s specialist panda husbandry team.

On July 27, 2008, her first birthday, Mei Qing was transferred to Guangzhou Chimelong Safari Park as part of a long-term cooperative breeding and conservation education partnership between the park and the China Giant Panda Conservation Research Center. She has resided at the facility continuously since that transfer, living in a purpose-built panda habitat designed to mimic the species’ native temperate mountain forest environment, with access to varied bamboo forage, enrichment structures, and veterinary care from a dedicated on-site specialist team.

Mei Qing is a well-documented participant in the national captive breeding program, with her health, behavior, and reproductive status regularly monitored and recorded as part of broader species management efforts. As a high-profile resident of Chimelong Safari Park, she is a popular draw for both domestic and international visitors, with the park integrating information about her life history, the giant panda’s native ecology, and broader species protection initiatives into its public educational exhibits. Her public visibility has contributed to increased popular awareness of giant panda conservation needs, while her inclusion in the managed breeding population supports ongoing efforts to maintain a genetically robust, self-sustaining captive population as a buffer against wild population declines.
