Pe Pe

Pe Pe, male giant panda with studbook number 211, was born January 1, 1975, in the wild Minshan or Qionglai mountain habitats of Sichuan Province, China, to two unrecorded wild giant panda parents, with no official parentage documentation retained in international giant panda studbook records. He was captured as a young adult and transferred to human care, arriving at Chapultepec Zoo in Mexico City on January 1, 1976, where he remained for the full duration of his life in managed care. As one of the earliest wild-born giant pandas to reside in a North American zoo, he immediately drew sustained public interest upon his arrival, with visitors traveling across Mexico and beyond to view the rare species.

Throughout his time at Chapultepec Zoo, Pe Pe participated in the institution’s core public education programming focused on giant panda habitat protection and species conservation. His wild origins allowed zookeepers and researchers to document natural giant panda behaviors for educational and scientific purposes, including his typical bamboo-dominant diet, which made up over 90% of his daily food intake during his residency. His long tenure at the zoo allowed multiple generations of visitors to engage directly with messaging around the threats facing wild giant panda populations, including habitat loss and fragmentation in their native Sichuan range.

Pe Pe passed away in 2002 after 24 years of residency at Chapultepec Zoo. At the time of his death, he was recognized as one of the longest-lived wild-born giant pandas in managed care outside of China. His decades-long presence in Mexico City is credited with raising widespread regional and global awareness of giant panda conservation needs, and he is regularly cited in institutional records from Chapultepec Zoo as a foundational figure in their global endangered species outreach efforts. No surviving offspring of Pe Pe are recorded in official giant panda studbook data.
