Short version
Qing Cheng (青城, studbook #1102) is a male giant panda born August 11, 2017 at the Wolong Hetaoping Base. Nicknamed "Toffee" for his caramel fur, he was named after Qingcheng Mountain as a Dujiangyan mascot. Now living at Anshan 219 Zoo and renamed "Gang Gang," his 8th birthday featured a Northeast Chinese bathhouse theme — a giant wooden tub, watermelon carvings, and a radish "scrubbing towel."
Qing Cheng (Chinese: 青城, also known as Gang Gang/刚刚), studbook number 1102, is a male giant panda born on August 11, 2017 at the China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Pandas (CCRCGP) Hetaoping Base in Wolong, Sichuan. His mother is Fei Fei (妃妃).
In 2018, Qing Cheng was chosen alongside three other pandas — Li Dui, Yu Lei, and Ling Yan — as the official mascots of Dujiangyan. The naming ceremony was part of a global campaign that invited name submissions from around the world.
On May 21, 2020, Qing Cheng and another panda named A Ling (阿灵) traveled to Anshan 219 Zoo in Liaoning Province, Northeast China. The zoo held a public naming contest, and Qing Cheng emerged as “Gang Gang” (刚刚).
For his 8th birthday in 2025, Qing Cheng’s keepers at Anshan 219 Zoo organized a celebration themed around Northeast China’s famous bathhouse culture (东北洗浴文化) — a beloved regional tradition. The setup included:
On the day itself, keepers went further: they applied a small amount of dragon fruit juice to Qing Cheng’s cheeks to create a “blush” effect, and dabbed a red dot on his forehead — a traditional Chinese blessing. Qing Cheng, ever the good sport, played along enthusiastically: he climbed into the tub, splashed in the water, and demolished his cake with evident satisfaction.
Qing Cheng is known around Anshan as a “Kung Fu Panda” (功夫熊猫) — agile, playful, and surprisingly athletic for his round frame. He loves climbing high, splashing in water features, and rolling in snow during winter months. His caramel-toned fur remains a distinguishing feature, lighter than the typical panda’s black markings.
