Tuan Tuan

Tuan Tuan, a male giant panda with the global studbook number 628, was born on September 1, 2004, at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. He is the son of parent giant pandas Long Hui and Xin Xin, with his lineage formally documented in the international giant panda studbook system that tracks the genetic diversity and family lines of the global captive giant panda population. For the first year of his life, he resided at the research center, where he received specialized care from conservation staff and reached key developmental milestones for juvenile giant pandas, including the transition to a bamboo-focused diet and the development of species-typical social and foraging behaviors.

On September 1, 2005, Tuan Tuan was transferred to Taipei Zoo as part of a cross-strait cooperative conservation initiative, arriving alongside female giant panda Yuan Yuan to establish a long-term panda conservation and education program at the institution. The transfer was structured to support collaborative research between mainland Chinese and Taiwanese conservation teams, with joint monitoring protocols put in place to track Tuan Tuan’s health, behavior, and adaptation to his new environment over the course of his residency.

Since his arrival at Taipei Zoo, Tuan Tuan has been a central participant in the facility’s endangered species public outreach and conservation education programming. As a fully grown adult male, he exhibits characteristic giant panda foraging patterns, spending the majority of his active daily hours consuming different varieties of bamboo, a behavior that has been featured in educational materials to inform visitors about the species’ unique dietary requirements and the ecosystem preservation needed to support wild panda populations.

Tuan Tuan has drawn consistent, cross-regional public attention from visitors across Taiwan and mainland China, becoming a prominent ambassador for giant panda conservation efforts. His public presence has raised broader awareness of the species’ protected status, and his residency at Taipei Zoo has supported ongoing collaborative research between regional conservation teams, contributing to the collective knowledge base that informs global giant panda recovery and habitat protection initiatives.
