Su Lin

Su Lin (Chinese name: 苏琳, studbook number 603) is a female giant panda born on August 2, 2005, at the San Diego Zoo, to parents Bai Yun and Gao Gao, who were residing at the facility as part of a long-term Sino-U.S. giant panda breeding loan agreement. She was among the first giant panda cubs successfully born to loaned pandas in an American zoological institution, a milestone that drew widespread public attention to cross-border collaborative conservation efforts for the vulnerable species at the time. Su Lin spent the first year of her life at San Diego Zoo, where zookeepers monitored her early developmental milestones, from first steps to the introduction of bamboo into her diet, with regular public updates shared with global panda enthusiasts.

On August 2, 2006, her first birthday, Su Lin was transferred to the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, in line with the terms of the international breeding loan program that requires all panda cubs born outside China to return to their native country for participation in species recovery initiatives. She joined the center’s global giant panda conservation breeding program shortly after her arrival, where she has since contributed to expanding the genetic diversity of the ex-situ giant panda population, a core priority for maintaining a resilient captive population that can support future wild reintroduction efforts.

In her current residence at the China Conservation and Research Center, Su Lin exhibits typical giant panda behavioral patterns, including spending more than 12 hours per day foraging for bamboo, the primary food source for the species. Her role in the breeding program supports long-term conservation goals focused on bolstering wild giant panda populations and preserving their native forest habitats in Sichuan province, China. As a high-profile individual born as part of international collaborative conservation work, Su Lin continues to serve as a public ambassador for giant panda protection, raising awareness of the ongoing threats to wild panda habitats and the importance of cross-border partnerships in endangered species recovery.
