Zhen Zhen

Zhen Zhen (Chinese name: 珍珍, studbook number 696) is a female giant panda born on August 3, 2007 at the San Diego Zoo in the United States. She is the third offspring of male panda Gao Gao and female panda Bai Yun, both of whom were residing at the San Diego Zoo at the time of her birth as part of a long-term collaborative giant panda conservation program between the United States and China. Zhen Zhen was born in good health, and veterinary monitoring in her first year of life confirmed she developed age-appropriate motor and feeding behaviors consistent with robust captive panda cubs.

In August 2008, shortly after her first birthday, Zhen Zhen was transferred to the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, in line with the terms of the Sino-U.S. panda cooperation agreement which requires pandas born outside China to return to their native range for breeding and conservation efforts once they reach suitable age. Following her arrival at the center, she underwent a standard acclimation period to adjust to local climatic conditions, native bamboo varieties, and social dynamics with other pandas in the captive population, and acclimated fully without notable health complications.

As of 2024, Zhen Zhen remains a resident of the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, where she participates in the species survival breeding program and associated public education initiatives focused on raising awareness of giant panda habitat protection. She displays typical foraging and climbing behaviors consistent with healthy adult giant pandas, and has contributed to multiple research projects investigating the adaptation of captive-born pandas to native range environments, providing data that supports evidence-based protection strategies for the vulnerable species. Her origin as a panda born through cross-border conservation collaboration has made her a prominent representative of the success of international partnerships in advancing endangered species protection outcomes.
