高高

alive male Born: January 1, 1990

Gao Gao is a male giant panda born on January 1, 1990 in the wild of the Qinling Mountains. His studbook number is 415, and he was captured as a wild subadult before being transferred to managed care for conservation research. He is the offspring of two unidentified wild giant pandas native to the Qinling Mountains. Gao Gao has fathered multiple offspring with the female giant panda Bai Yun during his time at the San Diego Zoo. Currently living at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in Sichuan, he participates in the center’s coordinated giant panda conservation breeding program. This program supports genetic diversity management for the species’ ex situ population. As a wild-born Qinling giant panda, Gao Gao carries genetically distinct ancestry not found in most managed giant pandas, making him a valuable contributor to population genetic diversity. He gained international public attention during his 15-year residence at the San Diego Zoo, helping raise global awareness of giant panda conservation.

Full Narrative

Life Story

Gao Gao (Chinese: 高高) is a male giant panda with studbook number 415, born on January 1, 1990, in the wild of the Qinling Mountains, a major giant panda habitat range in central China. Born to two unidentified wild Qinling giant pandas, he was captured as a subadult in his native habitat and transferred to managed care to support species conservation research. His wild origins give him a genetically distinct ancestry separate from the majority of pandas born in ex situ breeding programs, a trait that has made him a high-priority individual for global giant panda conservation efforts throughout his life.

In 2003, Gao Gao was transferred to the San Diego Zoo as part of the long-term Sino-U.S. giant panda cooperative research and breeding program. During his 15-year residence at the California facility, he sired multiple offspring with female giant panda Bai Yun, all of whom were later returned to China as part of the program’s breeding exchange terms. His time at San Diego Zoo brought him widespread international public attention, with regular updates on his health, behavior, and cubs drawing millions of views across global media platforms, and helping to raise public awareness of the threats facing wild giant panda populations and the importance of cross-border conservation collaboration.

Gao Gao returned to China in 2018 and currently resides at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in Sichuan Province, where he participates in the center’s coordinated national conservation breeding program. His unique Qinling genetic lineage fills a critical gap in the genetic diversity of the global ex situ giant panda population, reducing the risk of inbreeding and improving the long-term viability of managed populations that may one day be used for reintroduction efforts. As of 2024, he remains a core individual in the species’ global conservation portfolio, and his decades of contribution to both research and public engagement have made him one of the most well-documented wild-born giant pandas in managed care.
