Xing Hui

Xing Hui (Chinese name: 星徽) is a male giant panda born on July 22, 2009, at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. He is registered under studbook number 734 in the international giant panda studbook system, the official global registry that monitors the genetic diversity of all captive giant pandas to support evidence-based conservation breeding efforts. His parents are Bing Tian (studbook number 606) and Wu Wen (studbook number 446), both captive-bred pandas housed at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, whose lineages are recognized as genetically valuable for the long-term sustainability of the global captive panda population.

On his first birthday, July 22, 2010, Xing Hui was transferred to Pairi Daiza, a zoological park in Belgium, as part of the long-term international giant panda cooperative breeding program jointly overseen by Chinese and global wildlife conservation bodies. His placement at Pairi Daiza was selected specifically to support genetic diversification of the European captive panda population, a core goal of the global breeding program designed to avoid inbreeding and maintain a robust, self-sustaining captive cohort as a safeguard for the species.

Like all captive giant pandas, Xing Hui follows a diet consistent with the species’ evolutionary adaptations, with bamboo making up nearly 99% of his daily food intake. His presence at Pairi Daiza has contributed to multiple peer-reviewed research projects focused on captive panda feeding behavior, social interaction patterns, and reproductive biology, all of which generate data used to refine care protocols for pandas in human care and inform habitat restoration strategies for wild populations. He also functions as an informal cultural and conservation ambassador, drawing millions of visitors to Pairi Daiza each year and raising public awareness of threats facing wild giant pandas, including habitat fragmentation and climate change impacts on bamboo forest ecosystems.
