Narrative

Life story

Start with a concise summary, then continue into the full narrative record for You Hin.

Short version

You Hin (Chinese name: 阳滨, studbook number 776) is a female giant panda born on August 11, 2010 at Adventure World, a zoological park in Shirahama, Wakayama, Japan that has operated giant panda conservation and breeding programs in partnership with Chinese institutions since the 1990s. She is the offspring of father Ei Mei (studbook number 390, also known as Yong Ming) and mother Rau Hin (studbook number 515, also known as Mei Mei), both of whom were housed at Adventure World as part of the long-term Sino-Japanese giant panda conservation collaboration focused on advancing captive breeding research for the vulnerable species. Per the global giant panda studbook system, which tracks the lineage, health, and movement of all captive giant pandas worldwide, You Hin’s formal identifier is 776, allowing conservation teams to maintain accurate breeding records to support species genetic diversity.

On August 11, 2011, her first birthday, You Hin was transferred to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in Chengdu, Sichuan, China, where she resides permanently. The Chengdu Research Base is a leading global institution for giant panda research, captive breeding, and wild reintroduction initiatives, and You Hin is integrated into the facility’s coordinated conservation programming. Her lineage records, maintained through the global studbook system, are used to inform scientifically managed breeding matches that avoid inbreeding and preserve the genetic health of the captive giant panda population, a key pillar of broader species recovery efforts.

You Hin’s status as an individual born through international conservation partnership makes her a prominent fixture in the Chengdu Research Base’s public education and outreach work. She is regularly featured in visitor programming that teaches audiences about giant panda ecology, the ongoing threats to wild populations concentrated in the mountain ranges of Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu provinces, and the importance of cross-border collaboration for endangered species protection. Her life history serves as a tangible example of how coordinated international efforts have supported the recovery of the giant panda species, which was reclassified from Endangered to Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List in 2016 following decades of targeted habitat protection and captive breeding work.
