Short version
Hu Chun (湖春), studbook #794, is a female giant panda born on September 8, 2010 at the Ya'an Bifengxia Base. Her father is Wu Gang (武岗, 502). In September 2017, she traveled to Taman Safari Indonesia in Bogor alongside Cai Tao (彩陶). In November 2025, she gave birth to Indonesia's first-ever giant panda cub, named Satrio Wiratama (Rio) by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.
Basic Profile
Hu Chun (Chinese: 湖春) is a female giant panda born on September 8, 2010, at the Ya’an Bifengxia Base, weighing 179.6 grams at birth. She holds the global studbook number 794.
Her father is Wu Gang (武岗, studbook 502) and her mother is Ye Ye (晔晔, studbook 495). In May 2013, she was sent to Taiyuan Zoo in Shanxi alongside Cai Tao for an exchange program, and both returned to Sichuan in October 2015.
Journey to Indonesia
On September 27, 2017, Hu Chun and Cai Tao departed from Wolong Shenshuping Base for Indonesia. They flew aboard Garuda Indonesia flight GA887 from Chengdu to Jakarta, beginning a 10-year conservation research program. They reside at Taman Safari Indonesia in Bogor, West Java, living in a panda house at 1,800 meters altitude — close to their native Sichuan climate.
Motherhood
On November 27, 2025, at 17:31 local time, Hu Chun gave birth to the first giant panda ever born in Indonesia through natural breeding. The cub, weighing 228 grams five days after birth, was named Satrio Wiratama (昵称Rio) by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto — a Javanese name meaning “brave, noble, virtuous knight.” The China Conservation and Research Center provided 24-hour online guidance during the birth and dispatched an expert to assist in person.
Current Status
Hu Chun continues to reside at Taman Safari Indonesia with Cai Tao.

Rio: Indonesia's First Homegrown Giant Panda
On November 27, 2025, a tiny panda cub was born at Taman Safari Indonesia in Bogor — the first giant panda ever born on Indonesian soil. Named Satrio Wiratama ('noble knight') personally by President Prabowo Subianto, and known to the world as Rio, this cub is the son of Cai Tao and Hu Chun, the pair that arrived from China in 2017. His birth after four natural mating attempts and four artificial inseminations marks a historic milestone for panda conservation in Southeast Asia.
