Yuan Zi

Yuan Zi, a male giant panda with the studbook registration number 1249, was born on 4 August 2008 at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. His father is the male giant panda Po, and his mother is the female giant panda registered under studbook number 844. From birth, Yuan Zi was integrated into official giant panda conservation programming, with his lineage systematically recorded in the global captive panda breeding registry. This tracking is a core component of global species management efforts, as it allows conservationists to monitor genetic diversity across captive populations and reduce the risk of inbreeding for the vulnerable species.

Shortly after his first birthday, in August 2009, Yuan Zi was transferred to ZooParc de Beauval in France as part of a long-term international collaborative conservation partnership between Chinese and French wildlife authorities. The transfer was part of a broader global initiative to support panda breeding research, public education, and cross-border conservation knowledge sharing. Since his arrival at the zoo, Yuan Zi has been observed exhibiting typical wild giant panda foraging patterns, spending approximately 12 hours each day consuming bamboo alongside specially formulated supplementary nutrient feeds designed to meet his dietary requirements in a captive setting.

Yuan Zi has emerged as a key focal point for public engagement with giant panda conservation at ZooParc de Beauval, drawing more than 1 million visitors to the site each year. His presence has enabled targeted education campaigns that highlight the threats of habitat loss facing wild giant panda populations in the mountainous south-central regions of China, while the revenue generated from visitor attendance directly funds both in-situ habitat restoration projects in China and ex-situ captive breeding research across global panda holding institutions. As of 2024, he remains an active participant in the Sino-French panda conservation program, contributing to ongoing research into panda health, behavior, and reproductive biology.
