Jiao Zi was a female giant panda born on August 21, 1995 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. In 1996 she became China's first socially adopted panda, sponsored by the Chengdu Cigarette Factory. She was named "Jiao Zi" meaning "Heaven's Favorite Child" and became a Chengdu cultural icon. In 2013 at age 18, she gave birth to Chengdu's first surviving giant panda triplets. She passed away on May 13, 2024.
