Fei Fei

Basic Profile

Fei Fei (Chinese: 妃妃, “Imperial Consort”), studbook number 432, is a female giant panda born on August 16, 1995 at the China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Pandas (CCRCGP) Hetaoping Base. Her father is Pan Pan (盼盼) and her mother is Yong Ba (永巴).

The “Carefree Mom”

Fei Fei is famous for her distinctive parenting style — or as fans call it, her 潇洒 (carefree/chic) approach to motherhood. She had one particularly clingy cub who followed her everywhere: if she ate, he ate; if she slept, he slept; if she moved, he moved. Fei Fei’s patience had limits.

Videos show her grabbing the persistently clingy cub by the scruff of the neck with her mouth and dragging him across the enclosure — the cub flopping helplessly behind her, covered in dirt. Fans dubbed her the “Carefree Mom” (潇洒麻麻) and the cub the “Little Mop” (小拖把).

But when keepers took the cub for a health check, Fei Fei’s true feelings emerged. She dropped her bamboo, rushed to the door, shook the gate frantically, and called out until her cub was returned. The “indifferent” mother was anything but.

Health

On August 9, 2024, Fei Fei experienced a seizure at the Dujiangyan Base. Emergency treatment was administered, and she stabilized. As of the latest reports, she was under close observation by veterinary staff.
