Short version
Long Teng (龙腾, studbook #524) was a male giant panda born September 16, 2000 at the Wolong Hetaoping Base. Twin of Long Fei, he survived the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake with 10+ injuries while his base was only 20 km from the epicenter. He lived at Shenyang, Hengyang, and Linyi zoos over his life. He died at 23 from gastric torsion.
Long Teng (Chinese: 龙腾, “Soaring Dragon”), studbook number 524, was a male giant panda born on September 16, 2000 at the China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Pandas (CCRCGP) Hetaoping Base. His twin brother is Long Fei (龙飞). Their father is Da Di (大地) and mother is Yong Ba (永巴).
His siblings include Fei Fei (妃妃), Jin Zhu (锦竹), and others — forming a large and diverse sibling network through their parents.
On July 27, 2007, Long Teng was sent to Shenyang Glacier Animal Park for a planned 12-month exhibition. He stayed for 283 days before returning to Sichuan on May 4, 2008.
Eight days after his return, on May 12, 2008, the Wenchuan earthquake struck. The Wolong base — only 20 km from the epicenter — was devastated. Long Teng was one of two pandas injured, sustaining more than 10 wounds in the chaos. He was isolated for emergency treatment and recovered.
On June 10, 2010, Long Teng arrived at Hengyang Zoo in Hunan. The zoo built a new 200-square-meter panda pavilion for him, complete with a glass-walled air-conditioned indoor area and outdoor exercise yard. His stay was extended by popular demand for a second year.
On September 26, 2012, Long Teng was transferred to Linyi Zoo in Shandong. Upon arrival, he refused fresh bamboo and circled his enclosure warily — but by September 29, he had settled in enough to meet the public. He returned to Wolong in 2015.
On September 6, 2023, Long Teng died at 23 years old from gastric pyloric torsion causing acute pulmonary congestion and respiratory failure.
