On May 12, 2008, during the Wenchuan earthquake, the giant panda Mao Mao (毛毛, studbook #504) went missing at the Wolong base. On June 5, rescue teams clearing the ruins of the panda enclosures found her remains buried beneath mudflow debris and a collapsed enclosure wall; the rubble made immediate recovery impossible.
On the morning of June 10, once the collapsed wall had been cleared away, Wolong staff recovered her body and held a formal funeral, laying her to rest in the Wolong mountains. She left behind three cubs — the eldest three years old, the youngest under one — who were raised by keepers in the base's nursery.
Her son Wang Wang would later be sent to Adelaide Zoo, and her daughter Xi Dou would become one of the center's most prolific mothers. The 2009 release of the film The Last Trick (《熊猫回家路》), which she had filmed in 2008, carried a memorial dedication to her in its closing titles.
