⚠️ Three pandas share the name Mao Mao. This page is #504, the wild-born female rescued in 2000 who died in the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. She is not the same as #570 Fu Wa (福娃), the Chengdu-born veteran dam and mother of Re Gan Mian (Ping Ping #1230) selected for Zoo Atlanta in 2026.
Mao Mao (毛毛, studbook number 504) was a female giant panda born in 1999 in the wild in Beichuan County (北川县), Sichuan. She was rescued and moved to the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda (Wolong) on April 29, 2000. Later that year she was adopted by pop singer Mao Amin (毛阿敏), who paid the first year’s care fee of 30,000 yuan at a July 29 adoption ceremony — and it was then that she received the name “Mao Mao”.
