Short version
Qi Zhen (奇珍, studbook #490) is a female giant panda born September 4, 1999 at Chengdu Base. Daughter of Mei Mei (梅梅) and Ha Lan (哈兰). Her name means "Seven Stitches" — her mother accidentally tore her chest skin at birth, requiring 7 stitches. She is a prolific mother known for extremely fast deliveries, and her cubs include Wu Yi (51g record) and Huan Huan (sent to France).
Basic Profile
Qi Zhen (Chinese: 奇珍, studbook number 490) is a female giant panda born on September 4, 1999 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.
Her mother is Mei Mei (梅梅, studbook 408), the Japan-resident “hero mother” known for successfully raising twin cubs with little human help, and her father is Ha Lan (哈兰), a wild-born sire. Ha Lan has no separate entry in this archive.
The Name: “Seven Stitches”
Qi Zhen’s name tells a dramatic story. She was Mei Mei’s first cub, and her inexperienced mother was frightened by the tiny, pink, hairless newborn. In her panic, Mei Mei accidentally tore the skin on Qi Zhen’s chest with her claws.
Quick-thinking keepers risked Mei Mei’s wrath to rescue the injured cub. A veterinarian performed emergency surgery, requiring seven stitches to close the wound. To commemorate the seven stitches that saved her life, she was given the name “奇珍” (Qi Zhen) — a homophone for “seven stitches” (七针).
Motherhood
Qi Zhen inherited her mother Mei Mei’s exceptional maternal instincts — Mei Mei was renowned for successfully raising twin cubs with minimal human intervention.
Qi Zhen mated naturally with Lin Lin (琳琳, studbook 455) on February 27, 2010, and from mid-July began the reduced appetite typical of a pregnant panda.
On August 6, 2010, Qi Zhen gave birth to twin cubs — Zhen Qiao (珍巧) and Zhen Hao (珍好) — the first pair born at Chengdu Base that year, and 2 hours 39 minutes apart. In an astonishingly efficient delivery:
- First cub, Zhen Qiao (female, 153 g) — at 1:06 PM, just 1 minute after her waters broke
- Second cub, Zhen Hao (male, 149 g) — at 3:45 PM, just 5 minutes after her waters broke
She demonstrated remarkable skill: holding the first cub in her arms while gently picking up the second with her mouth — exactly as her mother Mei Mei had done. Both cubs were healthy.
Offspring
Qi Zhen’s recorded cubs at the Chengdu Base, with their studbook numbers:
- Zhen Da (珍大, 629) and Wu Yi (五一, also known as Zhen Xiao 珍小, 630) — twin sons born August 7, 2006
- Bei Bei (贝贝, 722) and Huan Huan (欢欢, 723) — twin daughters born August 10, 2008. Huan Huan later traveled to ZooParc de Beauval in France, where she gave birth to France’s first giant panda
- Zhen Qiao (珍巧, 779) and Zhen Hao (珍好, 780) — a twin daughter and son born August 6, 2010
- Zhen Zhen (真真, 814) and Qiao Qiao (巧巧, 815) — a twin daughter and son born August 4, 2011
Two further entries in this archive, San You (三优, 1078) and Zhen Duo (珍多, 928), record Qi Zhen as their mother, but neither appears in the Chengdu Base birth records above.
Her own siblings, all born to Mei Mei, include the brothers Xiong Bang, Ming Bang, Xing Bang, Qiu Bang and Long Bang, and the sisters Ai Bang and Liang Bang.
