Short version
An An (安安, studbook #1183) is a male giant panda born on June 28, 2019 at the Wolong Shenshuping Base. Son of Lin Bing, he is one of the mascots of Ya'an City. In September 2024, he was gifted to Hong Kong alongside female Ke Ke as the third pair of pandas presented by the central government, now residing at Ocean Park Hong Kong.
An An (Chinese: 安安), studbook number 1183, is a male giant panda born on June 28, 2019 at the China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Pandas (CCRCGP) Wolong Shenshuping Base. His mother is Lin Bing (林冰, studbook 933).
He was named “An An” together with female panda Ya Ya (雅雅) as the official mascots of Ya’an City, receiving his naming certificate at the 150th anniversary celebration of the scientific discovery of giant pandas in 2019. His name was retained upon arriving in Hong Kong — together with Ke Ke, “安安可可” sounds like “encore” (安可) in Chinese, symbolizing the hope for more good news for Hong Kong.
An An lived at the CCRCGP Ya’an Base. On August 3, 2022, his third birthday was celebrated with a themed event featuring a digital music collection called “Panda Concert.”
On September 26, 2024, An An and female panda Ke Ke (可可) departed for Ocean Park Hong Kong as the third pair of pandas gifted by the central government. After a 30-day quarantine, they moved into their new home on October 27. They made their public debut on December 8, 2024, retaining their original names.
An An is described as having long limbs and distinctive eye patches (眼圈有一个角). He is active, intelligent, and bold. He feeds on Guangdong bamboo and has adapted well to Hong Kong. By May 2025, his weight had increased from 130 kg to 138 kg. In spring 2025, the zoo arranged 6 meetings between An An and Ke Ke through a gate — An An showed no interest in mating (不近美色), focusing entirely on eating bamboo, so no natural breeding was attempted that year.
Hong Kong is now home to 6 giant pandas — the largest number outside mainland China — including An An, Ke Ke, Ying Ying, Le Le, and twins Jia Jia and De De.
