Full Narrative
Lin Bing, a female giant panda with studbook number 740, was born on May 27, 2009, at Chiang Mai Zoo in Thailand. She is the offspring of Chuang Chuang (studbook number 500) and Lin Hui (studbook number 529), two giant pandas loaned to Chiang Mai Zoo by China as part of bilateral international giant panda conservation cooperation programs. Her birth marked a notable success for cross-border collaborative breeding efforts for the vulnerable species, and she spent the first year of her life in residence at the Thai zoo, where she was closely monitored by zoo veterinary and conservation staff to support her healthy development.
On her first birthday, May 27, 2010, Lin Bing was transferred to the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, the world’s largest dedicated giant panda conservation facility, where she currently resides. She is an active participant in the center’s coordinated captive breeding program, which is designed to support the growth of genetically diverse, sustainable captive giant panda populations. As a descendant of two genetically distinct individuals from the global captive panda population, her inclusion in the program adds valuable genetic diversity to the collective breeding pool, reducing the risk of inbreeding and supporting the long-term health of the species in human care.
During her year at Chiang Mai Zoo, Lin Bing gained widespread international public attention, drawing millions of visitors to the facility and generating significant global media coverage focused on giant panda conservation efforts. Her high public profile helped raise broad awareness of the threats facing wild giant panda populations, including habitat loss and fragmentation, and highlighted the value of international collaborative initiatives for vulnerable species protection. As of 2025, she remains a key contributor to the China Conservation and Research Center’s ongoing conservation work, supporting both research into giant panda reproductive biology and public education initiatives focused on wildlife protection.
