Basic Profile

Chuang Chuang (创创, “create”), studbook number 510, was a male giant panda born on August 6, 2000 at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in Sichuan, China. His father was Xin Xing (新兴) and his mother was Bai Xue (白雪, studbook 418), a legendary wild-born female known for her escape attempts and strong survival instincts.

Chuang Chuang lived in Thailand for 16 years and became a beloved cultural symbol of Sino-Thai friendship.

Family

Chuang Chuang’s mother Bai Xue (studbook 418) was born wild in 1988 and lived to approximately 27 years old, passing away on June 27, 2015.

With his mate Lin Hui (林惠, studbook 577), Chuang Chuang fathered:

  • Lin Bing (林冰, studbook 706), female, born May 27, 2009 at Chiang Mai Zoo — the first giant panda born in Thailand.

Life Journey

On October 12, 2003, three-year-old Chuang Chuang and his mate Lin Hui were sent to Chiang Mai Zoo in Thailand under a 10-year Sino-Thai cooperative research agreement. The agreement was later extended beyond its original term.

In November 2005, Chuang Chuang and Lin Hui were housed together for natural breeding attempts. In 2007, the zoo performed artificial insemination. On May 27, 2009, Lin Hui successfully gave birth to a female cub, Lin Bing, who became the first giant panda born in Thailand and a national sensation.

On September 16, 2019, Chuang Chuang was found behaving abnormally by zookeepers at Chiang Mai Zoo. Despite emergency rescue efforts, he died that evening. A joint Sino-Thai autopsy determined the cause of death was acute heart failure (chronic cardiac insufficiency with acute发作) leading to systemic organ hypoxia. No external injuries or airway obstructions were found.

Chuang Chuang’s death prompted enhanced health monitoring measures for Lin Hui, who continued living at Chiang Mai Zoo until her own death on April 19, 2023.
