Si Xue

Basic Profile

Si Xue (Chinese: 思雪, “Thinking Snow”), studbook number 625, is a female giant panda born on July 22, 2006 at the China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Pandas (CCRCGP) Hetaoping Base. She was the first giant panda cub born anywhere in the world in 2006.

Her mother is the legendary Bai Xue (白雪, studbook 418) — the escape artist who twice fled captivity — and her father is Shi Shi (师师, studbook 467) .

Wild Offspring

Si Xue’s daughters have been central to China’s rewilding program:

• Xue Xue (雪雪, studbook 850): Rewilded in 2014, died 42 days after release from infection
• Ying Xue (映雪, studbook 955): Successfully rewilded at Liziping Nature Reserve in 2017 — one of the few captive-born pandas to survive in the wild

Life Journey

Si Xue was described as wild-natured and alert as a cub, displaying more caution around humans than her peers. On September 19, 2017, she was transferred to Shanghai Wildlife Park, where she currently resides.

Motherhood at Shanghai

• October 4, 2017: Gave birth to Xue Bao (雪宝, studbook 1117)
• September 13, 2019: Gave birth to a male cub who died from acute encephalitis on December 18
• July 21, 2023: Gave birth to Bing Xue (冰雪)
