Ba Te

Ba Te, a male giant panda with the Chinese name 巴特 and global studbook number 880, was born on August 10, 2013, at Chongqing Zoo. As confirmed in the latest population survey conducted by the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, he remains in good health as of current records. He is the offspring of Baoxiong and Yinghua, two captive-bred giant pandas housed at Chongqing Zoo as part of the facility’s formal conservation breeding initiatives. His full lineage is formally documented in the official national giant panda studbook overseen by China’s State Forestry and Grassland Administration, ensuring his genetic background is traceable for managed breeding efforts.

Ba Te has resided at Chongqing Zoo for his entire life, as part of the institution’s longstanding participation in the national giant panda conservation network. He is an active participant in the zoo’s ex-situ giant panda conservation breeding program, where his confirmed genetic lineage contributes to efforts to maintain healthy genetic diversity within the global captive giant panda population. Alongside his role in breeding initiatives, he is accessible to public viewing as a core component of Chongqing Zoo’s wildlife education programming, which aims to teach visitors about giant panda ecology, habitat loss, and ongoing species recovery work across China.

In his daily care routine, Ba Te exhibits species-typical foraging and resting behaviors, consuming between 15 and 20 kilograms of bamboo each day, alongside specialized supplemental feeds provided by the zoo’s panda care team. He has become a popular draw for both domestic and international visitors to Chongqing Zoo, with his public presence supporting broader public awareness of giant panda conservation needs both in captive settings and in the species’ native wild habitats in Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu provinces. His continuous inclusion in formal conservation registries and managed breeding programs ensures he remains a valuable contributor to the long-term sustainability of the captive giant panda population.
