Chong Chong

Chong Chong (Chinese name: 重重) is a male giant panda born on June 15, 2019 at Chongqing Zoo, with a global giant panda studbook registration number of 1262. He is the offspring of Lu Lu and Ya Ya, two captive-bred giant pandas residing at Chongqing Zoo, both of whom are part of a coordinated captive management program for the species overseen by the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. Since his birth, Chong Chong has maintained consistent good health, with his physical condition and developmental progress regularly monitored by the zoo’s resident veterinary and giant panda research teams.

Chong Chong has remained at Chongqing Zoo for the duration of his life, residing in a large, naturalistic enclosure designed to replicate the temperate bamboo forest habitats of wild giant panda populations in southwest China. He exhibits typical species-specific behavioral patterns, devoting the majority of his daily activity to foraging on fresh bamboo supplied by the zoo’s animal care staff and resting in shaded areas of his habitat. As a young, genetically distinct individual in the national captive giant panda population, he participates in the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda’s coordinated captive breeding program, contributing to the maintenance of genetic diversity within the managed population.

In addition to his role in species management, Chong Chong is a core participant in Chongqing Zoo’s public education initiatives focused on giant panda habitat protection and endangered species conservation. He is a popular draw for both domestic and international visitors to the zoo, with regular public observation opportunities allowing visitors to learn about giant panda biology and the ecological threats facing wild populations. His presence supports broader public engagement with conservation efforts, while his medical and behavioral data collected by zoo researchers contributes to ongoing studies supporting the long-term survival of the giant panda species.
