Short version
Bing Hua (冰华, studbook #929) is a female giant panda born August 9, 2014 at the Ya'an Bifengxia Base. Daughter of You You and Lu Lu, she was one of four pandas sent to Shenyang Forest Zoo in 2017. Her gender was confirmed after arriving in Shenyang — keepers had been unsure. She celebrates annual birthdays with themed cakes and is known for her lively, people-loving personality.
Bing Hua (Chinese: 冰华, “Ice Flower”), studbook number 929, is a female giant panda born on August 9, 2014 at the China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Pandas (CCRCGP) Ya’an Bifengxia Base. Her mother is You You (优优) and her father is Lu Lu (芦芦), one of the most prolific sires in the captive breeding program.
Bing Hua has eight siblings through mother You You: Qian Qian (芊芊), Duo Duo (朵朵), Xin Ni’er (新妮儿), Xiang Lu (香芦), Zhi Chun (知春), Yue Yue (月月), Ban Ban (半半), and Ya Nan (雅男). A ninth sibling, assigned studbook 930, did not survive.
On January 27, 2015, Bing Hua was moved from Bifengxia to the Hetaoping Wild Training Base, where she spent her early development in a more naturalistic environment.
On September 17, 2017, Bing Hua was one of four pandas — alongside Pu Pu (浦浦), Fa Fa (发发), and Bing Qing (冰清) — loaded onto specialized transport for a simultaneous relocation to Shenyang Forest Zoo in Liaoning Province. It was the zoo’s first-ever panda exhibit, and the arrival of four pandas at once was a major event for the city.
Approximately eight months after her arrival in Shenyang, Bing Hua’s keepers made an interesting discovery. During a routine health check, they formally confirmed her gender as female. The detail was noted in the zoo’s records without further explanation — suggesting that like many pandas, Bing Hua’s gender may have been uncertain or misidentified at a younger age before becoming clear as she matured.
Bing Hua has become a beloved fixture at Shenyang Forest Zoo. She is described by her keepers as lively and people-oriented — a panda who actively engages with visitors and responds enthusiastically to enrichment activities.
Her birthdays are celebrated annually with fan participation:
During the 2026 Spring Festival, Bing Hua participated in a seasonal enrichment event. She showed particular interest in sound-making and scented props, responding with active exploration and playful engagement — behavior that her keepers cited as evidence of her curious, outgoing temperament.
