Bing Xing

Bing Xing (Chinese name 冰星, studbook number 518) is a male giant panda born on September 1, 2000 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in Sichuan, China. He is the offspring of two captive-bred giant pandas housed at the Chengdu Research Base: father Baoxin (studbook number 424) and mother Bingbing (studbook number 465). As of the latest verified conservation records, Bing Xing remains in good health in his current managed care setting.

On September 1, 2001, exactly one year after his birth, Bing Xing was transferred to Zoo Aquarium de Madrid in Madrid, Spain, as part of a long-term collaborative conservation partnership between Chinese and Spanish wildlife institutions. He has resided at the Madrid facility ever since, where he receives specialized care tailored to the biological needs of adult giant pandas, including a diet consisting of more than 99% bamboo, consistent with the foraging patterns of his species in both wild and captive settings.

Bing Xing participates in two core institutional programs at Zoo Aquarium de Madrid: public educational outreach and the global captive giant panda breeding coordination program overseen by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. As a cultural ambassador between China and Spain, he draws millions of visitors to the zoo each year, providing opportunities for the public to learn about giant panda ecology, habitat loss, and broader species conservation priorities. As a mature male with confirmed genetic lineage tracing back to the well-documented Chengdu Research Base breeding population, he contributes valuable data to ongoing research into captive panda health, reproductive biology, and adaptive care practices for the species.
