Hua Zuiba

Hua Zuiba (studbook number 476) is a female giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) born on September 1, 2000, at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in Sichuan Province, China. She is the offspring of Baoxiong (studbook number 393) and Wuyi (studbook number 402), both resident pandas at the Chengdu Research Base at the time of her birth, and her lineage traces back to wild giant panda populations native to Sichuan’s Minshan mountain range, a core historical habitat for the species. As a registered individual in the global giant panda studbook, her genetic background is formally documented to support evidence-based captive population management.

On her first birthday, September 1, 2001, Hua Zuiba was transferred to Zoo Aquarium de Madrid in Spain, as part of a long-term international cooperative conservation agreement between Chinese wildlife authorities and the Spanish zoological institution. She is currently one of the longest-resident giant pandas in the European captive panda network, and participates in the global giant panda conservation breeding program coordinated by China’s State Forestry and Grassland Administration. This program is designed to maintain high levels of genetic diversity across the global captive panda population, reducing inbreeding risk and supporting the long-term viability of the species as a whole.

Hua Zuiba has played a consistent role in public education and conservation outreach for over two decades at Zoo Aquarium de Madrid, introducing millions of European visitors to giant panda ecology, habitat loss pressures, and global threatened species protection efforts. Her regular observation by zoo research staff has also contributed to cross-institutional studies on giant panda feeding behavior, social interaction patterns, and best practices for long-term captive care, providing actionable data to improve welfare standards for pandas housed in institutions outside of their native range. Her presence remains a visible symbol of Sino-Spanish collaboration on biodiversity conservation, and she draws steady public engagement for global panda protection initiatives.
