Huan Huan Jr.

Huan Huan Jr. (Chinese name: 欢欢) is a male giant panda born on August 10, 2021, at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. He is assigned studbook number 1278 in the global giant panda breeding registry, a standardized database that monitors genetic diversity across the entire captive giant panda population to support sustainable breeding efforts. His parents are Bing Bing and Xi Wang, both adult giant pandas residing at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, and his birth was the outcome of a planned breeding program coordinated between Chinese wildlife conservation authorities and international zoological institutions.

On his first birthday, August 10, 2022, Huan Huan Jr. was transferred to Zoo Aquarium de Madrid in Spain as part of a long-term joint ex-situ conservation agreement between Chinese and Spanish conservation bodies. The program he participates in has two core goals: to conduct applied research into giant panda reproductive biology and species-specific behavior, and to raise widespread public awareness of threats facing wild giant panda habitats and broader biodiversity conservation initiatives in China’s mountainous southwest regions.

As a young captive-born individual, Huan Huan Jr. exhibits all typical behavioral and physiological traits of his species: his diet is predominantly made up of several varieties of bamboo, supplemented with specialized nutrient pellets, and he spends large portions of his day alternating between resting, foraging, and climbing on the enrichment structures in his enclosure. He is one of the highest-profile cultural attractions at Zoo Aquarium de Madrid, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, and serves as a tangible ambassador for global giant panda conservation work, which contributed to the species’ reclassification from Endangered to Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List in 2016. His presence in Madrid also supports ongoing public education campaigns that connect local communities to international wildlife protection efforts, highlighting the value of cross-border collaboration for at-risk species conservation.
