Da Jiao (Chinese: 大娇, nicknamed MJ/Mother Jiao), studbook number 645, is a female giant panda born on August 30, 2006 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Her mother is Jiao Zi (娇子, studbook 425).
Da Jiao’s claim to fame is her extraordinary composure during childbirth. In 2016, during her second delivery, her water broke at 2:16 AM. Most pandas would pace, cry out, and show clear distress. Da Jiao? She went back to sleep. For over an hour, she napped peacefully while in active labor, showing none of the typical pre-birth behaviors. She finally delivered a healthy male cub at 3:55 AM.
