Short version

Jiao Yi (娇毅, studbook #1281), nicknamed "Big Monitor" and "Cha Cha," is a male giant panda born June 15, 2022 at the Chengdu Research Base — the base's first cub of 2022. Weighing only 85.3 grams at birth, he is instantly recognizable by the single tuft of black hair sticking up from the center of his head — the "Strongest Antenna." Adopted by tea chain Chabaidao.

Basic Profile

Jiao Yi (Chinese: 娇毅, nicknamed Da Ban Zhang/大班长 — “Big Monitor”, adopted name Cha Cha/茶茶), studbook number 1281, is a male giant panda born on June 15, 2022 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding — the first panda cub born at the base in 2022.

He weighed only 85.3 grams at birth — below the average for panda cubs — but was healthy and vocal from the start.

His mother is Da Jiao (大娇, studbook 645), and his siblings include Qian Qian (倩倩), Nan Nan (囡囡), and Jiao Ao (娇奥).

The “Strongest Antenna”

Jiao Yi’s most distinctive feature is a single tuft of fur on the top of his head: black at the tip, standing upright against his otherwise white head. It looks like a tiny接收天线 (receiving antenna), earning him the nickname “Strongest Antenna” (最强天线) from keepers. He also has pronounced black pigmentation on his feet (“墨足”).

Adoption by Chabaidao

On May 16, 2023, Jiao Yi was lifelong adopted by the tea chain Chabaidao (茶百道) and renamed “Cha Cha” (茶茶) in a ceremony held at the Chengdu Base.
