Dan Dan

Dan Dan (Chinese name: 旦旦, studbook number 439) is a female giant panda born on September 16, 1995, at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. Her father is the male giant panda Ba Si (studbook number 324), and her mother is a female giant panda registered under studbook number 331, both of which were participants in the coordinated international captive breeding program for the species. Her lineage traces back to wild-born giant panda ancestors native to the Qinling Mountains in central China, a region recognized as one of the core natural habitats for wild giant panda populations.

First transferred to Adventure World in Japan in September 1996, Dan Dan remained a resident of the facility for nearly 28 years until her death in 2024. During her time at the site, she was a core participant in long-term collaborative giant panda research and conservation projects between Chinese and Japanese scientific teams, as well as a key feature of the park’s public education programming focused on endangered species protection. Her care and observation were closely coordinated with the global giant panda studbook management system, which tracks captive populations to support the genetic diversity and long-term sustainability of the species under human care.

As one of the longest-living captive giant pandas recorded in Japan, Dan Dan attracted millions of visitors throughout her residency, playing a prominent role in raising public awareness of giant panda conservation across East Asia. She was widely noted for her gentle, predictable foraging behavior and consistent engagement with public exhibit activities, making her a well-documented subject for research into captive giant panda behavior, health, and longevity. Data collected during her decades of observation has contributed to global understandings of giant panda care protocols, and her public profile helped foster broad public support for cross-border endangered species conservation initiatives.
