Feng Ning

Feng Ning, a female giant panda with the studbook number 1354, was born on August 30, 2022, at the Fuping Wild Panda Habitat in the Qinling Mountains, under the management of the Wolong National Nature Reserve. Her birth is formally recorded in the China Giant Panda Studbook maintained by the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. She is the offspring of male panda Mei Lan and female panda Le Le, both wild-born individuals that have spent their entire lives within protected natural giant panda habitats in China. This wild lineage gives Feng Ning a valuable place in the broader genetic pool of the species, which is categorized as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.

Feng Ning has resided in the Fuping Wild Panda Habitat her entire life, and is part of the reserve’s long-term wild giant panda monitoring program. The program tracks her movement patterns, foraging habits, and social interactions with other wild pandas in the area to collect critical baseline ecological data for the species. Researchers have observed that she displays species-typical wild foraging behavior, spending more than 10 hours each day consuming bamboo, the primary food source for giant pandas. As she matures, her ongoing participation in the program will provide new insights into juvenile panda development and social dynamics in undisturbed natural habitats.

Her successful birth and survival to date are viewed as a key indicator of the effectiveness of habitat protection efforts in the Qinling Mountains region. Unlike captive-born pandas that require carefully managed reintroduction processes to survive in the wild, Feng Ning has developed all necessary survival skills naturally under the care of her mother, eliminating the need for human intervention in her daily life. Her continued presence in the wild population contributes directly to the genetic diversity of the local giant panda group, supporting long-term population resilience and reducing the risk of inbreeding in the region’s isolated panda communities. For conservation organizations, Feng Ning has become a public-facing representative of wild panda protection success, helping to raise awareness of the importance of preserving intact natural habitats for the species long-term.
